Perched on a hill with stunning views of the Jurassic Coast and the Cobb, Mark Hix's Oyster and Fish House in Lyme Regis is worth going to for the vista alone. With a location like this you can be sure of the very best local seafood which might include Lyme Bay mackerel, Dartmouth scallops and Poole cockles.
People come for the oysters, of course and they are truly special. There are classic Duchy Rocks, Portland Royals, and Yealm Rocks - small, intensely delicious river oysters from Devon.
Stripped floors, floor to ceiling windows and simple rustic tables make for a relaxed atmosphere whilst immaculately sourced local ingredients let the food speak for itself. Hix doesn't mess about with his food - he excels at serving just-caught fish cooked simply and classically. Memorable dishes included monkfish curry and simple yet utterly fresh and delicious fish goujons accompanied by the best chips this year.
If the beach isn’t beckoning, sit back and soak up the view while you enjoy a bottle from the well put together wine list, or sample some local cider or perry. And if you’ve got fidgety kids in tow there is crazy golf and outdoor ping pong tables in full view just down the hill. We can’t think of a better place to spend a lazy summer afternoon.
And while you’re down there:
