Caro Somerset in Bruton

We do love a new shopping experience here at Country Calling especially one that goes hand in hand with sublime coffee and cakes. Caro Somerset opened its doors in Bruton this week and we like what we see.

An interiors/lifestyle store with an all bells and whistles coffee machine and incredible, sculptural cakes courtesy of The Bakemonger.

Caro Somerset focuses on every day luxury – so there are beautiful pinwheel throws alongside hip geometric tea towels, a good looking grey Thermos (to replace your Mum’s 1980s tartan one), a beautiful Japanese tea pot for your green tea.

Good stuff for men too like the whiskey stones, a bag of grey stones to chill whiskey without melting ice into it, and the 4 in 1 bar tool – a silver contraption which hammers ice, opens beer bottles, uncorks wine and supplies a jigger measure. Father’s Day nailed for the boozer in your life.

I’d call it a gift shop but that would give you entirely the wrong impression. Except that this really is the perfect place to score a tasteful, covetable present – beautiful notebooks, cool but useful kitchen utensils (loving the pink handled wooden citrus juicer), Aesop bath products.

Caro Somerset also sells old fashioned non toxic Mangle and Wringer cleaning products which feature ingredients like lemon oil, citric acid and bicarbonate of soda made up to 1920s housemaid Bette Mangle’s secret recipe. Love that.

The coffee is exceptional, sourced from Round Hill Roastery in Radstock and as to the cakes, from The Bakemonger, three words, oh my God. They are extraordinary, like works of art but totally delicious too, using rare, artisan ingredients.

The idea is that you come for a coffee with friends, hang out on the beautiful Danish Hay furniture, sample a cake and do a little light browsing while you’re at it.
