We booked a group of 6 children ranging in age from 7-12 into Harlyn Surf School on a wet Sunday afternoon in June. Expectations on the way there were low... 'there is no way I am doing that for 2 hours...' etc.. you get the picture. The first stroke of genius is to provide kit - our group were given 2 wetsuits each, plus boots and rash vests. Shivering away on the beach, we were pretty envious. The kids were then taken through a warm up routine which seemed to have them all in stitches - luckily of the humorous kind. Before long they were in the water and thanks to the skill and patience of their 2 instructors all were standing up before the first hour was up. Then came the fun bit - the older ones managed to catch some pretty good waves and then learned a few tricks to boot.
We've tried a few surf schools in the area but none have come close to Harlyn Surf School in terms of professionalism and fun. Those who get the bug can hire boards for the rest of the holiday (recommended), and the surf school also offers coasteering, sea kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.
And for afterwards...
The Cornish Arms in St Merryn - for post-surf pints and hot chocolate. Great food and lots of space to sit outside if you're lucky with the weather. A Country Calling favourite.
Harlyn Surf School are offering 2 great competitions on Country Calling - more details here
