Back to School....


In the late summer haze tinged with rust the children have returned to school, dragging their book bags behind them, begging for final beach moments and blackberry picking stop offs. The Curly One is now in full time education and other than ‘hating it’, ‘being hit all the time’ and ‘eating nostrils’ for lunch he seems to have settled in well.

The B&B has a constant stream of couples arriving to enjoy the south west now safe in the knowledge that there are no children around to spoil the beaches. I try to hide my three at check-in as the fear in the guest’s eyes is palpable when they see a boy in slashed camouflage, carrying an ornamental musket and a loud haler. Or the Daughter setting up her outdoor spray paint workshop a little too close to their car. To apologise in advance this month we are welcoming the guests with a bottle of Kingston Black Apple Aperitif. That’s West Country Autumn in a bottle that is. I love this time of year. I say it every year. As Strictly starts, big tubs of Quality Street (other chocolate varieties are available) stack the shelves and flip flops are a gamble, I get caught up in making cobblers, preserves and lists of what to achieve before the end of the year. It’s probably the time I feel most at home in the country, exactly as I imagined it would be when I lived in the city for the first 35 years of my life. Well almost exactly as I imagined. The Georgian rectory, ha ha and farm shop are taking longer to materialise…
